Kucinich renews call for Afghan withdrawal.

In a Friday press release, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) condemned a NATO airstrike which killed 95 people, including much of the population of a small Afghan village, and renewed his call for the United States to withdraw its forces from both Afghanistan and Iraq. “News reports covering today’s attack by the U.S. command southwest of Kunduz province show that the good intentions of NATO forces in Afghanistan are not sufficient,” Kucinich stated. “If we want to avoid killing innocent civilians, we must end the war.”.Link

Unemployment rate reaches a 26-year high.

Even though the unemployment rate has officially reached a 26-year high, there are indicators that the recession might not be worsening. The US unemployment rate jumped to 9.7 percent in August as 216,000 jobs were lost, the government said Friday in a report showing improving labor market conditions. The jobless rate rose three-tenths of a point to the highest since June 1983, but the data nonetheless showed an easing of the massive pace of job losses in an economy struggling to emerge from recession. The Labor Department report, seen as one of the best indicators of economic momentum, showed job losses narrowed considerably. Revised rate showed 276,000 jobs lost in July and 463,000 in June, higher than prior estimates of 247,00 and 443,000, respectively...Link

Ron Paul finds support for Fed audit...........

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After decades of pushing long-shot causes like abolishing the income tax and reinstating the gold standard, Republican Representative Ron Paul finds himself in an unaccustomed spot: on the cusp of legislative victory. A majority of the libertarian-leaning Texan's colleagues in the House of Representatives support his proposal to increase congressional scrutiny of the Federal Reserve, and the measure could be included in a broader banking overhaul this fall. But don't expect the House to take up Paul's other pet causes, such as pulling out of the United Nations...Link

Fully 87 percent of those questioned in the CNN survey said they believe the United States was in a serious, moderate or mild recession. Public perceptions about the economy's wellbeing are very important, particularly in the United States where two-thirds of economic activity is consumer spending...Link

Gonzales ‘flip-flops’ yet again...................

John Dean believes Ridge was ‘pressured’ to back down on threat alert claims. Either former Bush officials are being pressured to backtrack, or recent flip-flops are just more evidence that they had no convictions in the first place. In a story entitled Gonzales backtracks on support for CIA probe, The Washington Times‘ Ben Conery reports, “Former Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales said Thursday that his previous assertion that it was ‘legitimate to question and examine’ charges of CIA abuses of suspected terrorists did not mean he endorsed such an investigation.”...Link
