Making Gasoline from the Sun..............
A Louisville, Colorado, company says it has perfected a solar-energy technology capable of producing 100 million gallons of synthetic gasoline annually from corn stalks and wood chips. Sundrop Fuels Inc., which has constructed a 60-foot tower rising above a nearly 3,000-mirror solar array near Highway 7 and Interstate 25 in Broomfield, Colorado, already has proven it can generate synthetic gas using the sun’s heat. Now it wants to raise between $100 million and $150 million to build the world’s first solar-powered biorefinery. That demonstration project could make 7 million to 8 million gallons of gas a year...Link
Obama increases nuclear weapons budget.
"I have embraced the vision of John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan through a strategy that reverses the spread of [nuclear] weapons, and seeks a world without them," President Barack Obama claimed during his first State of the Union speech. "To reduce our stockpiles and launchers, while ensuring our deterrent, the United States and Russia are completing negotiations on the farthest-reaching arms control treaty in nearly two decades." Yet, in the budget the Obama White House will send to Congress on Monday, the administration proposes a 10 percent spending increase on the nation's nuclear weapons budget, bringing the total to roughly $7 billion, according to McClatchy Newspapers...Link

Banking Cabal Emerges From AIG........
Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The idea of secret banking cabals that control the country and global economy are a given among conspiracy theorists who stockpile ammo, bottled water and peanut butter. Bernanke confirmed...................
After weeks of uncertainty, the Senate on Thursday voted 70 to 30 to confirm Ben Bernanke for a second term as chairman of the Federal Reserve. The final vote on his nomination immediately followed a procedural vote of 77-23 to end debate. Bernanke, originally nominated by President Bush in 2006 to succeed Alan Greenspan, was renominated by President Obama in August. The weeks leading up to the Jan. 31 expiration of his first term proved tumultuous for the country’s head banker...Link

Jake Towne Skyrockets to 8%.....
Today the incumbent released some startling numbers from a recent poll paid for by his campaign. The results: Towne 8%, Republocrat A 53%, Republocrat B 27%. Scott Kraus of the Morning Call reported my total as "stunningly high" and he is correct - it is a tribute to both the hard work of the campaign's volunteers in spreading the message so far, and the growing discontent of the district with the Washington, DC establishment. This is impressive since it is still quite early in the election season, and I have not been able to spread the message to a high amount of residents just yet - we obviously have 92% left to cover - and I have not yet even begun to fight...Link

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned that the financial markets would view a Senate rejection of Ben Bernanke's renomination as "very troubling" but said he's sure the embattled Federal Reserve chairman will prevail. "We're very confident that the chairman will be reconfirmed by the Senate, and we think it's very important he be reconfirmed by the Senate," Geithner said Friday in an interview at the Treasury for POLITICO's new video series, "Inside Obama's Washington," debuting Monday...Link

Ben Bernanke no sure bet in the Senate.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke may be Time magazine’s Man of the Year — but he hasn’t convinced senators he’s the man for the job. In the wake of Tuesday’s Massachusetts stunner, Bernanke’s chances of returning for a second term as head of the Fed were thrown into doubt, as a pair of liberal Democratic senators Friday jumped on the dump-Bernanke bandwagon. It was no idle threat. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he’d call a vote next week but couldn’t say for sure Friday that he has the 60 votes to confirm Bernanke by the time his term expires Jan. 31...Link
‘A whole new system of housing finance’.
Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) has the nation's largest mortgage lenders squarely in his sights, and he's aiming to take them down. Backing what he called a "piecemeal" effort to reform how Americans purchase their homes, the Congressman said on Friday that the House Financial Services Committee, which he chairs, will likely move to abolish Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two banks previously considered "too big to fail." In their place, he said, "a whole new system of housing finance" should rise...Link

A House-passed provision to open up the Federal Reserve to an audit by the Government Accountability Office is unlikely to be included in the Senate reform package, Barney Frank told a meeting of House Financial Services Committee members Wednesday, according to people in the room. Frank, chairman of the committee, told the members that Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) told him that he had assured Sen. The medical marijuana debate among American voters is over. Eight in 10 Americans -- 81% overall -- support allowing doctors to prescribe cannabis, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll. That's up from just 69% in 1997, the last time the two firms asked that question, and from 75% in 2003, according to Gallup. Obama confidant's spine-chilling proposal.
Cass Sunstein has long been one of Barack Obama's closest confidants. Often mentioned as a likely Obama nominee to the Supreme Court, Sunstein is currently Obama's head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs where, among other things, he is responsible for "overseeing policies relating to privacy, information quality, and statistical programs." In 2008, while at Harvard Law School, Sunstein co-wrote a truly pernicious paper proposing that the U.S. Government employ teams of covert agents and pseudo-"independent" advocates to "cognitively infiltrate" online groups and websites -- as well as other activist groups -- which advocate views that Sunstein deems "false conspiracy theories" about the Government. This would be designed to increase citizens' faith in government officials and undermine the credibility of conspiracists. The paper's abstract can be read, and the full paper downloaded, here...Link

Interviews But Few Press Conferences.
There's a tug of war in every administration between the White House and the media that cover it. Reporters want more access and more quality time to question the president, while staffers want to control how the message plays. The two goals are quite often at odds. In the era of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and blogs, the Obama Administration has been savvy about how it communicates its message and seems to agree with the previous administration on at least one point: Go around the media filter and engage directly with the U.S. public...Link

‘We want our money back'.
President Barack Obama's message to banks on Thursday was simple. "We want our money back," he said, during "a brief appearance with advisers at the White House," the Associated Press reports. "We are already hearing a hue and cry from Wall Street, suggesting that this proposed fee is not only unwelcome but unfair, that by some twisted logic, it is more appropriate for the American people to bear the cost of the bailout rather than the industry that benefited from it, even though these executives are out there giving themselves huge bonuses," Obama said...Link

Obama will seek additional $33 billion for wars.
The Obama administration plans to ask Congress for an additional $33 billion to fight unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, on top of a record request for $708 billion for the Defense Department next year, The Associated Press has learned. The administration also plans to tell Congress next month that its central military objectives for the next four years will include winning the current wars while preventing new ones and that its core missions will include both counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations. The administration's Quadrennial Defense Review, the main articulation of U.S. military doctrine, is due to Congress on Feb. 1. Tea Party Movement Is About To Be Hijacked.
In the latest sign of rancor in Tea Party circles, a convention billed as an effort to bring together conservative activists from across the country is being attacked by some leading Tea Partiers as inauthentic, too tied to the GOP, and -- at $549 per head -- too expensive for the working Americans the movement aspires to represent. The National Tea Party Convention, scheduled for early February in Nashville, grabbed headlines after announcing that Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann would appear as speakers, Palin as the keynote.
